Ashwagandha (ASH) Extract Used for the Preparation of Biodegradable Chitosan Films for Active Food Packaging

Ashwagandha (ASH) extract has been successfully utilized as a natural additive in the preparation of biodegradable chitosan (Cs)-based films for active food packaging applications. In this study, the incorporation of ASH extract into Cs matrices aimed to develop functional films capable of extending the shelf life of perishable produce, specifically fresh-cut strawberries.
The chitosan solution was formulated by dissolving 6 g of Cs in 300 mL of 1% acetic acid under continuous stirring. Different volumetric ratios of concentrated ASH extract were added to the Cs solution-specifically 1 mL, 3 mL, and 6 mL-producing the film variants ASH1/Cs, ASH3/Cs, and ASH6/Cs, respectively. These solutions were homogenized using ultrasonic treatment, degassed in an ultrasonic water bath, and then cast into silicon-coated Petri dishes for air drying.
The resulting films demonstrated enhanced bioactivity compared to pure Cs films (ASH0/Cs), attributed to the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the Ashwagandha extract. This integration not only contributes to the mechanical and barrier properties of the films but also imparts active preservation capabilities, making them suitable candidates for environmentally friendly food packaging solutions.
This study highlights Ashwagandha (ASH) extract as a sustainable bioactive agent for improving the functionality of biodegradable polymer films, promoting cleaner and more efficient food preservation technologies.
