DescriptionRose Bengal is an organic compound and belongs to the class of xanthenes. In 1882, Swiss chemist Robert Ghnem synthesized rose bengal as a 4,5,6,7-tetrachloro 2',4',5',7'-tetraiodofluorescein analogue. It is a commonly used dye for detecting damage to the ocular surface epithelium in ocular surface diseases like dry eye and herpetic keratitis.
