Abstract:

Inositol exists in nine possible stereoisomers, of which myo-inositol and scyllo-inositol are widely present (1). Inositol is a substrate for kinases to form a number of secondary messengers in cells, such as inositol phosphates, phosphatidylinositol, and phosphatidylinositol phosphate (2). scyllo-Inositol has been shown to interact with β-amyloid (Aβ1-42) peptides (3, 4), and phosphatidylinositol inhibits fibrillogenesis (5). scyllo-Inositol is currently in clinical trials for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. myo-Inositol and scyllo-inositol are actively transported into cells primarily by the Na+-dependent myo-inositol cotransporter system (1). scyllo-Inositol has been detected in human breast tumor extracts and may serve as a marker for breast cancer (6). In comparison with 2-[18F]fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose ([18F]FDG), 1-deoxy-1-[18F]fluoro-scyllo-inositol ([18F]-scyllo-inositol) has been evaluated as a positron emission tomography (PET) tracer for imaging of inflammation as well as breast and brain cancer xenografts in nude mice (7, 8).
