Abstract:

The "In" crowd: "Dissolution" of the widely used synthetic reagent indium(I) iodide in tmeda/toluene mixtures (tmeda=N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine) gives [In6I8(tmeda)4]. Its stability and significant solubility in toluene makes it an alternative reagent for synthetic methodologies employing InI. DFT studies (see picture) suggest that its deep red-orange color arises from metal-based σ→σ* electronic transitions.
